I will never forget the day I realized I wanted to become a designer. It was the fall of 1997 and I was reading an issue of SLAM! Magasine, the 100% Mike edition. I cam across an interview with Tinker Hatfield speaking on the creation of the Jordan Brand the new Air Jordan, the 13. The moment I read those words and saw that shoe I knew that taking my skills of art and combining it with my passion would lead to career of fulfillment. Fast forward to 2013 and it is now the 15th anniversary of what I consider to be the greatest Air Jordan ever. To celebrate the anniversary I asked my good friend Tinker Hatfield to take the time and tell me the story of the 13.

Tinker shared with me some amazing insight into the design and I am now sharing it with you. Check it out below and give me your thoughts in the comments section!

    • Thanks J! I appreciate that.

It was great to hear him share those stories. His memory is ridiculous. I loved hearing him breakdown the material selection and the form direction! It was just great talking with him about a shoe that was so important to me.

Hello Brett, I am someome who aspires to design sneakers just as you and Tinker Hatfleld do. I am glad to see this post, even though I have not been able to listen to it yet due to hectic circumstances. I want to know whay you think one should do ingr order to become a great sneaker designer? How did you meet Tinker? He is the one I look up to!

    • If you want to become a great a sneaker designer, you need to sketch a lot and have a lot of passion. Keep pursuing it and you will make it. Good luck!

  6. Listened to this on my way home the other day. I really enjoyed the conversation you both had. The design process he talked about is great. I love the insight around the 3M usage and the fact that it was one of the first shoes to use Photoshop in the design process.

    Awesome work. Any more illustrations?

    • Thank you! I am glad you liked it. I thought it was awesome to hear the story as well. I am always in awe when I hear him speak. As for illustrations, I posted these three here:
