What The Hell Is Going On With The FlyKnit Trainer Prices?
Right now the most anticipated shoe on my list for the year is the Nike FlyKnit Trainer and the FlyKnit Racer, in particular the Blue FlyKnit Racer because it is beautiful.
These past two weekends were the 2012 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon; obviously Nike had a strong presence there and from what I understand via appointment only you could get the FlyKnit Racer or Trainer. Now I don’t know the exact specifics of it but apparently during the appointment they steamed the shoes so they conform to your exact foot shape. That sounds amazing and is getting closer to the bespoke offering I spoke of in my Hacking The Industry article.
So for the fun of it I thought why not see if any those lucky customers put their pair up on eBay, maybe I can get a pair for a decent price? In my mind I was thinking anywhere from $145-$200 would be acceptable but I was wrong; TRY ANYWHERE FROM $500-$1,725! That doesn’t include shipping either. You can search for yourself or check out my screenshot below:
I am sorry, but what the hell is going on? I understand hype on limited product like the Yeezy’s and Jordan XI’s, but seriously FlyKnit trainers? That’s whats going on in the streets these days? FlyKnit trainers!
This is to the Hypebeasts that I so dearly love, don’t ruin this shoe. Don’t take it away before it has even been able to breathe. This shoe is way more important to the design world than it is to the limited and looking dope first crowd. I do respect your needs but don’t take a shoe that has so much more impact on the industry then just being a limited product. This is a shoe that completely changes how the construction of footwear is going to happen. I would rather see this shoe be sold for these prices at the MOMA, because it is being appreciated for what it is; than I would by some resellers trying to “galaxy” a new product that no one else has.
Please take into mind where Nike was selling this product, it was at the Olympic Trials where legit athletes and Track Nerds (if Track Nerds exist) come together in their running haven to see elite athletes push their bodies to the limits in hopes of being able to win Gold in London. There should have been very few traditional shoe collectors and Hypebeasts there and if they were there chances are they work right in Beaverton. Nike wants this shoe in the hands of real runners and real athletes that are going to take this shoe to its performance limits. That is why they released limited quantities there, they don’t want you to wear it once and put it back in it’s box.
I understand the idea of making a dollar, I guess go for it….I just never anticipated it would be on this type of a shoe.
PS if you have a pair let me know about it below, I am super interested to hear how it fits and feels.

The pairs with the ridiculous prices appear to be some of the special edition versions that released earlier this year. If I recall correctly, there were similar editions of the LunarRacers when they released 4 years ago. I would assume the general releases of the Flyknit Trainers and Racers will not get inflated on ebay. I’m very excited about getting the racers to wear in a couple of my fall races!
That is true there definitely are some of the HTM versions in those auctions but I am still shocked at how much they are going for.
The hype for them is definitely there and rightfully so, it’s going to be great shoe. I am interested to hear everyone’s feedback on how they run. So when you get your pair let me know how it works for you!

If you look closer at your screenshot you will see that not every pair is $500+. See the ones at $202.51? Those were mine. Sold just a couple days ago. I love these shoes, but I put them up for auction cause I know they’re releasing in July anyways and why not make a few extra bucks while there is still a chance. Mine sold for $258, whereas the people with BIN prices of $500+ haven’t sold anything..
That’s understandable why you would try and get rid of them.
You said you loved the shoes, what was your favorite aspect? How did they fit?

They reminded me of water socks that younger kids wear. I actually didn’t try them on which was hard to resist.
I bought them with the intention of wearing, but as you also saw on ebay the lure of quick easy money got to me. When they release later this month I will definitely get another pair for myself
That had to be very challenging not to try them.
So if they remind you of a water sock, is it safe to say they are neoprene based?
